- You don't say if when you typoe a key it overtypes the period, or if
- a period remains. IF the former case, I'd suspect the VIC. I've never
- seen a C64 where the VIC wasn't socketed. It will be the chip in the
- little metal "cage" on the board. The cautions are the usual need to
- avoid static electricity and bending the pins on inserting the chip.
- If you never get rid of the periods, then I agree that the probable
- culprit is the Character ROM. This may or not be socketed. Good luck.

- What your friend did is not alignment. The tried and true method is
- a program called the 1541 alignment system which was originally by
- Free Spirit Software. You might try Centsible Software
- centsible@delphi.com
- to see if they have one in. This program comes with alignment
- instructions.
-
- One other possibility is to download a program called just disk.
- The address is
- ccnga.uwaterloo.ca/pub/cbm/Util64/DISK
- This is a test program from Alps, who at one time made the 1541. It
- tests a bunch of things on a drive. I don't remember for sure if
- alignment is one of them or not. But even if it is, I imagine it will
- have to be downloaded onto a 1541 that IS properly aligned in order
- to be able to find ones that aren't. Also, this program does not have
- directions for aligning.
